Are you traveling to Cádiz? Do not miss these recommendations

June 15 2021
Cádiz is a paradisiacal destination on the Iberian Peninsula. The south of the south is the perfect combination of good weather, excellent gastronomy, dream beaches and ancient culture. In addition, all these attractions are concentrated not only in the capital, but throughout the province, and a good example of this is Hammam Sancti Petri, an unbeatable opportunity to enjoy peaceful Arab baths in Chiclana.

Sancti Petri was a fishing district that continued its activity, fishing for bluefin tuna by means of the trap art, until the mid-70s. In these decades it has been transformed into a space to welcome tourists and lovers of maritime sports, as it has a yacht club, restaurants, rental services for nautical activities and a wide range of accommodation in the area, such as the ILUNION Sancti Petri hotel.

Everything to enjoy its 2,000-meter-long beach surrounded by a dune system and a coastal pine forest. Some of the most spectacular beaches in all of Cádiz are concentrated in this area of the province. We show you some of its attractions.

From Sancti Petri to Tarifa, the best sandy beaches in Cádiz

Sancti Petri, south of the urban center of Chiclana de la Frontera, is the beginning of a set of enviable beaches, until reaching Tarifa: La Barrosa, La Cala de Roche, El Palmar, Zahora, Caños de Meca, Zahara de los Atunes, Los Alemanes, Bolonia and finally Los Lances. Dozens of kilometers of fine golden sand where the east wind is a faithful companion. The best way to get to know these beaches is to follow the N-340 road that connects Chiclana with Tarifa.

Some of these beaches are part of important urban centers, such as Playa del Carmen in Barbate or La Fontanilla and Fuente del Gallo in Conil de la Frontera. Others, on the other hand, such as El Palmar, Zahora, Los Caños de Meca or La Hierbabuena beach are a little more inaccessible, but this does not mean that in their surroundings you can find a high offer of accommodation.

Cádiz gastronomy, love for seafood

Unlike what happens a few kilometers further north, in the Bay of Cádiz, where recipes such as urta a la roteña, mackerel with piriñaca or shrimp omelette are very common, on the Atlantic coast closest to the Strait of Gibraltar, the main protagonist is the Almadraba bluefin tuna.

Fishing for this animal is a way of life in this area of the province of Cadiz, especially in Barbate, Zahara, Conil and partly also in Tarifa. The catch is less aggressive than other fishing gear, which gives it added value from a cultural, ethnographic, environmental, and also gastronomic point of view.

And speaking of gastronomy, some of the best restaurants to enjoy bluefin tuna, and other delicacies on the Cadiz coast are Cabo de Roche, El Timón de Roche, Manguita or El Tergal. All these restaurants are located between La Barrosa and Roche, then the access is quite comfortable from Chiclana de la Frontera.

The rich landscape and cultural heritage

Beyond the beaches and gastronomy, this entire area of Cadiz coast forms a unique space due to its historical, cultural and environmental value. Some of its beaches remain practically virgin, without the impact of man.

Enclaves such as the Trafalgar Lighthouse, in Caños de Meca, are of high historical relevance, as the famous Battle of Trafalgar took place in 1805 between the French-Spanish and English armies. Furthermore, this point marks the northwestern end of the Strait of Gibraltar.

Further south, on the beach of Bolonia, in the municipality of Tarifa, you can see the dune of Bolonia, a natural monument of great beauty from which you can see in the distance, on the beach itself, the ruins of the Roman city scored by Baelo Claudia. At the time, at the end of the 2nd century BC, this enclave was an important economic center in the westernmost Mediterranean.

And to all this we must add surfing, kitesurfing, windsurfing and other water sports, as well as the many scenic routes that extend along the coast, crossing sandy areas, pine forests and cliff areas.

The attractions of the Cadiz coast are infinite, therefore we invite you to visit the ILUNION Sancti Petri hotel where you can enjoy facilities such as aparthotels in Cádiz, to gain privacy and receive a well-deserved rest in the Hammam Sancti Petri Arab baths. And all this guaranteeing maximum safety and comfort.
