Things you can't stop doing if you come to Zaragoza
May 27 2021

Zaragoza, more or less equidistant between Barcelona, Madrid and Valencia, is one of the best destinations for a weekend getaway or better yet, on a bridge. The Aragonese capital is one of the most beautiful cities in Spain that alternates tradition and modernity and that perfectly combines all the charm you need as a traveler, allowing you to get lost in its magnificent corners and enjoy its art, culture, history and gastronomy in a same place.
From ILUNION Romareda, our hotel in Zaragoza, we invite you to discover the best plans in the city. Let's go there!
What to see in Zaragoza
Did you know that Zaragoza is the only city in the world with 2 cathedrals? That's right, both the Basilica del Pilar and the Cathedral of Salvador, also known as La SEO, are responsible for making the capital city unique in the world.
If you are in Zaragoza, you cannot miss these two works of art, so let's start our tour of the Plaza del Pilar, considered as "the hall of the city", at the foot of both cathedrals. In it, you are obliged to take a photo of yourself in the ball of the world and take advantage of planning what your next destination will be.
Nearby, you will see that the Basilica of Nuestra Señora del Pilar is located, one of the best Baroque temples in the country, which we undoubtedly advise you to contemplate. As you go to pay your respects to the Pilarica, do not forget to buy one of the measuring tapes of the Virgen del Pilar, which you must give to someone to give them luck. And don't forget to see the splendid Goya frescoes in the cathedral. By the way ... Have you ever noticed how small the Pilarica is compared to the majesty of the basilica?
If you are not afraid of heights, go up to the bell tower to enjoy a magnificent panoramic view of the city with the Ebro in the background.
Across the square is the Cathedral of the Savior, built in the 12th century on the remains of a mosque and on the ancient Roman forum of Caesar Augusta. It is worth visiting and above all, looking at its three main elements: its Baroque façade, the Dean's House and Arch and its bell tower.
Once you have visited these two main buildings in the city, you can decide whether to see the rest on your own or opt for a tour or tourist route. Another option is to take a ride on the tourist bus (the night bus makes a spectacular journey), although it is also possible to go by bicycle, taking advantage of the fact that Zaragoza is one of the cities with the most kilometers of bike lanes.
If you decide to walk, from the Plaza del Pilar, we advise you to take Alfonso I street and walk through the historic center until you reach the Coso. There you can see the remains of the Roman Wall and the Torreón de la Zuda (old Muslim fortress), where you can go up for free and have another panoramic view of the city.
Another of our recommendations is that you visit the Aljafería Palace, and at sunset, you go to see the sunset from the Stone Bridge, which is spectacular. As you can see, the charm of Zaragoza is getting lost in its streets, since you will always find emblematic places such as the Central Market or La Lonja de Zaragoza, and if you are lucky, you may even meet the younger sister of the Torre de Pisa, the New Tower in the Plaza de San Felipe.
What to eat in Zaragoza?
In every vacation you have to leave room for fun and culinary pleasure. If you are one of those who like to go informal, trying places, nothing better than going for tapas or pintxos on Calle del Tubo. This is the typical area where locals meet friends and go from bar to bar tasting the fantastic tapas they have. If you decide on this, be sure to try the croquettes from Bodegas Almau, some broken eggs at La Republicana or some good Aragonese crumbs at La Miguería.
If you prefer to eat as God intended, well seated and enjoying good gastronomy, you have to try typical dishes of the area such as lamb or shoulder of the oven, loin a la zaragozana or a good cod al ajoarriero. Dishes that are a delight in typical restaurants such as Meli Melo, El Champi or Taberna 1941.
Excursions from Zaragoza
If you have time and want to visit other places around the capital, there are certain excursions you can do. One of them would be to make a route to nearby towns such as Belchite or Tarazona and visit emblematic places such as the Monasterio de Piedra, an old Cistercian monastery surrounded by an incomparable natural setting.
