Badajoz was an important Visigothic and Roman settlement that, however, was founded in 875 during the Muslim occupation of the peninsula. It quickly became the capital of one of the largest and most important Taifa kingdoms of the time. After the reconquest, King Alfonso IX granted it special privileges, endowing it with an extensive territory. It is what is known today as its province, the largest in Spain.
During the Middle Ages, thanks to its strategic position, it became one of the main defensive strongholds and the center of diplomatic relations between Spain and Portugal. Its most representative moment in history occurs in the year 1580 when King Felipe II moved the entire Court to Badajoz while the occupation of Lusitania was taking place.
