Badajoz is a municipality in the autonomous community of Extremadura, located on the banks of the Guadiana River and bordering Portugal, has always been characterized by the cultural encounter between the two countries. In order for you to get to know this beautiful land and its inhabitants, the people of Badajoz, here are some of the most deeply rooted traditions of their culture, which you probably did not know.
1. Sayings and Expressions
Let's start by telling you the sayings and expressions that you will hear most often in Badajoz and in general, in the region of Extremadura.
The first thing you will notice is that here everyone gets affectionate very quickly, and they use diminutives for absolutely everything: "el muchachino", "el perrino"... And in Extremadura they put an extra affection for everything! On the other hand, you will hear people referring to "bichos" or "cacharros" everywhere. Everything can be a "cacharro" for them, no matter if it is the car or the blender.
2. Badajoz Carnival
Next, one of the favorite plans for the people of Badajoz are its traditional festivities. We must emphasize the Carnival of Badajoz. This is considered one of the best carnivals in Europe. The streets quickly turn into a multitudinous costume party characterized by the huge popular participation, about 80,000 people take to the streets! They tend to concentrate especially in the historic center, in the neighborhood of Santa Marina.
This fun celebration begins its history in the Middle Ages, with strong influences from the time of the beginnings of Christianity. From that time until now, carnivals indicate the beginning of the period of "recollection".
In 2023, the Carnival of Badajoz will last 10 days, starting on the weekend of February 18 and 19 until the 25th and 26th of the same month.
3. Chanfaina Festivities
The Chanfaina Festival is another of the favorite festivities of the people of Badajoz. It is a celebration during the last weekend of November and revolves around a typical dish of the region, called Chanfaina. This dish is made with lamb liver, bofe, heart and kidneys accompanied by tomato puree and white wine. It may surprise you if you are not used to eating lamb, but it is a real delicacy! The origin of this delicacy dates back to the Middle Ages, when the so-called "lords" ordered a lamb from the shepherds. These separated the meat from the entrails, so the "lords" ate the noble parts of the animal and the shepherds and those in charge of the service, took advantage of the leftovers or also called "casquería" and prepared what today is called Chanfaina.
Both celebrations are declared as Cultural-Artistic Heritage and Tourist Interest, so the public entities of Culture, Art and even Sports have their eyes on these celebrations. They promote them with resources and keep these celebrations alive for visitors to Badajoz, and of course, for the people of Badajoz.
